Things To Know About Getting Your Military Personal Loan

Being an active or retired member of the armed forces has many benefits and advantages. First and foremost there is honor in knowing you are doing, or did do, your part in protecting the freedom and beliefs of your country. There is also the benefit of receiving quality medical care, housing, and even securing loans for military personnel and retirees. Because you are on active duty or are retired from the armed services there are lenders who can help you with your military loan needs at lower rates than non-military people get from banks. But there are some things you will need to know and do to get your military personal loan.

Look For A Lender

The first thing you need to do is look for a lender that specializes in making loans

to military personnel. There are quite a few of these types of lenders on the internet. Review some these and compare interest rates for the best choice. If you are on active duty many duty stations have federal credit unions that cater specifically to military personnel and frequently offer the best lending rates.
When looking for a lender keep in mind that each one has its own criteria for loan distributions. If you are a retired service member some lenders will require proof of at least twenty years of service, while others may not. Also, almost every lender will require that you have at least an “under honorable conditions” discharge as part of their qualifying criteria.

Know The Borrowing Amount

Knowing the amount you want to borrow is also important when looking for a lending institution. Again, each lender has their own criteria and the amount you want to borrow is part of that criteria. Many military lenders will only loan a maximum of $10,000 to a first-time borrower.

Proof of Service, LES, & Other Documents

If you are on active duty you will need to provide the lender with your military identification card and your latest Leave and Earnings Statement (LES). If you are retired from the service you will need to provide your retiree identification card or your DD214 form. Other documents may be required, such as bank account information, collateral information if you’re putting up collateral, etc. If you are attempting to secure a military loan from a lender be sure you understand what information the lending agency needs from you.

Loan Application Cancellation

It’s important to know the cancellation terms of you loan application should you decide that you no longer need the loan, for whatever reason. Most companies that cater to military personal loans have a grace period of about fifteen days in which you can notify them of your desire to cancel the loan application. When applying to a lender ask them what their cancellation terms are.

Good Credit

As with lenders for non-military applicants having good credit can be a key factor in obtaining a military loan, especially if the loan is for a large amount. Lending institutions want to feel secure that they are going to get their money back. Having a good credit history means you are a good credit risk.
However, there are lenders for those military personnel who don’t have a good credit history. These lenders do charge more interest on the money lent, but often also offer budgeting programs and even counseling services to help you improve your credit rating.

For Veterans

Some lenders not only cater to active or retired military but to veterans as well. In some instances these lenders will make unsecured loans to veterans for things like the purchase of a car, household appliances, and other personal uses. However, loans to veterans are stricter as regards to the applicant’s credit history.
